ASMS 2011

The latest edition of PEAKS, version 5.3, is up for release. The BSI team hosted a live meeting on Sunday, June 5th at the Sheraton Hotel (Downtown) from 12pm (noon) - 2:30pm. This year, Dr. Bin Ma, CTO, Bioinformatics Solutions Inc. presented the following talk:

Title: A Practical Guide to Significantly Improving Peptide Identification Sensitivity and Accuracy

Abstract:

"People are generally over-optimistic about how reliable their results are.” – ABRF iPRG 2011.

The talk began with some common pitfalls in the use of today's result validation methods and a practical solution to avoid them.

He then demonstrated an innovative way to use PEAKS de novo sequencing to assist the database search for significantly improved peptide identification from a sequence database. This leads to the highly sensitive and accurate new PEAKS DB module in PEAKS 5.3.

Finally, he advocated that software users should not blindly trust the software's results, and point out a few simple but essential examinations that are needed to ensure peptide identification quality.

This meeting also discussed greater applications of the PEAKS software, unknown to many users, as well as provided a live demo of the new version. Private meetings were arranged throughout the week, based on availability.

For those unfamiliar to PEAKS, this release includes the database search tool, PEAKS DB, which performed outstandingly in the ABRF: iPRG 2011 study and out-performed many "popular search engines". Further details can be read in our ABRF highlight package and on the ABRF official slides page.
